Roosevelt Mercer, Jr. Named to Exclusive Membership Organization
Roosevelt Mercer, Jr. has a long, celebrated career in and out of the U.S. Military
WHITE PLAINS, NY, September 16, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Roosevelt Mercer, Jr., Vice President and Director of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance at ITT Corporation, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in the aerospace industry.
With over 30 years of experience in the USAF, General Mercer's final assignment was as Director, Plans and Policy. He was directly responsible to the Commander of the United States Strategic Sommand (USSTRATCOM) for the development and implementation of national security policy and guidance, military strategy and guidance, space and weapons employment concepts and policy, and joint doctrine as they apply to the command and the execution of its missions. He was also responsible for the development of the nation's strategic war plan, strategic support plans for theater combatant commanders and contingency planning for the Global Strike mission. He has commanded an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile operations squadron and an operations group in North Dakota, as well as a space lift logistics group in Florida. In addition, he commanded the space wing in California responsible for both satellite and ballistic missile test launch operations. He then commanded a training wing in Air Education and Training Command.
The general also served as Vice Director of Plans, U.S. Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, Deputy Director of Operations, Headquarters Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, and as the Commandant of the Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA, a part of National Defense University. Prior to assuming that position, General Mercer was the Director of Combat and Information Operations, Global Operations Directorate, USSTRATCOM. He retired as a two star general from the U.S. Air Force in January 2008. He attributes his success to his commitment to service in the military and in his civilian life. He firmly believes that service is the rent for living. General Mercer is currently the VP and Director, ISR for ITT Space Systems, in Rochester, New York.
General Mercer received his Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Oklahoma, Norman in 1985 and his Bachelor of Arts in Urban Planning from the University of Puget Sound in 1975. He also completed Leadership in Crisis Training through the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2007. He serves as Chairman of the Military Advisory Board for Bellevue University and is a member of the Rochester Institute of Technology President's Round Table Advisory Board, the board of the Rochester Veterans Outreach Center, a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the Air Force Association. In 2009, he was named one of the Top 25 African Americans in Business by Diversity Journal Magazine and was recognized as an Outstanding Young Man of America by The United States Junior Chamber in 2002. Gen. Mercer is also the recipient of the Roy Wilkins Renowned Service Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as well as various military awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal of the United States, the Legion of Merit and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. When General Mercer retires, he plans to participate in more public service for the underprivileged and inner city youth.
